  • Tribute Philippe Bernard

Philippe Bernard passed away on October 10, 2023.

You will find below a tribute written by our colleague Giorgio Cavallari.

As a member of the Superconducting Cavities R&D group for LEP Phase 2, I spent ten years with Philippe Bernard developing a technology to bring the energy of the LEP beams to 103GeV, a result which was obtained with some difficulty.

Philippe was a group leader who knew how to give us confidence: he was always by our side, listening to our difficulties and knowing how to protect us, if necessary.

He was also very active in the installation of Explorer, at the time the most sensitive antenna for the search for gravitational waves. It was on this cryogenic detector that a whole generation of physicists was trained, culminating in the discovery of the gravitational waves by the large interferometric detectors LIGO and Virgo.

Two years ago, I wrote to Philippe, who told me about his serious health problems. When I asked him whether he was considering a transplant, Philippe replied that he had given up on it to leave this possibility to someone younger. This, for me, is the mark of a man of integrity and generosity.

    Giorgio Cavallari

We invite you to also read the tributes published in the  GAC-EPA Bulletin 65 or on the CERN website.

  • CERN 70th Anniversary

    Dear Members,

At the end of September 2024, CERN will celebrate its 70th anniversary. You can find the press release by following this link .

Throughout the year, events (conferences, etc.) are planned to mark this event. A full programme can be found here: https://cern70.cern/events/ . Reservations can be made by clicking on the event you are interested in, in principle 3 weeks in advance.

CERN’s success is largely due to your commitment throughout your years as a member of the staff, and we are sure that you will be happy, if you have the opportunity, to attend some of these conferences. Note also that these will generally be broadcast by webcast.

  • Changes within the organisation of the GAC-EPA and of the CERN Staff Association

    Dear members

At its December 2023 meeting, the GAC-EPA Committee approved its organization for 2024. The main change concerns our representation on the CHIS Board, where Claude Genier replaces David Jacobs (still accompanied by Morna Robillard). As a result, Claude also replaces David among the 7 delegates to the Staff Council. The full organizational chart for 2024 can be found on our website https://new.gac-epa.org/en/gac-epa-committee/ .

We would like to warmly thank David Jacobs for his twelve years of intense and passionate work on the CHIS Board.

In mid-December, CERN’s Staff Council elected a new Executive Committee for the 2024-2025 term. You can consult the results on the Association’s website: https://staff-association.web.cern.ch/article/results-executive-committee-elections-2024-2025-mandate . On this same page, you will find the programme  of work on the basis of which the new team was elected, and you will see that issues that affect pensioners closely are at the heart of this programme.

  • Best wishes for 2024

    Dear GAC-EPA Members,

Receive our best wishes for 2024.

May this new year bring you moments of joy, love and success.

Of course, we wish you good health and would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your fidelity and support.

    Yours sincerely,

    The GAC-EPA Committee
