CERN Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS)

As an intergovernmental organization, CERN has its own Health Insurance Scheme called: CERN Health Insurance Scheme (CHIS).

The main purpose of the CHIS is to protect its Members from the financial consequences of illness, accidents and maternity by providing the reimbursement of expenses arising from medical treatment.

The CHIS is governed by the CHIS Board (see Governance and Administration) which was created in 1992 and works to ensure the objectives of the Scheme including its long-term financial balance in the interests of both the Members of the Scheme and of the Organization (see CHIS Rules).

The CHIS Board is a joint body of representatives of CERN management, on the one hand, and, on the other hand, of Members of the Scheme, active members of CERN personnel, and retired members, of whom two beneficiaries of the CERN Pension Fund, nominated in agreement with GAC-EPA.
